Read my review of The Irish Girl by Ashley E. Sweeney #HistoricalFiction #Comingofage #Review @GoddessFish

The Irish Girl
By Ashley E. Sweeney

From multi-award-winning historical fiction author Ashley E. Sweeney comes a family saga about the Irish immigrant experience spanning New York, Chicago, and Colorado so compelling that, USA Today best-selling author Kelli Estes says, “I read this story in one sitting.”

Thirteen-year-old Mary Agnes Coyne, forced from her home in rural Ireland in 1886 after being accused of incest, endures a treacherous voyage across the Atlantic alone to an unknown life in America. From the tenements of New York to the rough alleys of Chicago, Mary Agnes suffers the bitter taste of prejudice for the crime of being poor and Irish.

After moving west to Colorado, Mary Agnes again faces hardships and grapples with heritage, religion, and matters of the heart. Will she ever find a home to call her own? Where?

MY THOUGHTS!

With too little time in the day, and too little food to pass around, Mary Agnes Coyne is often overlooked in her family. That is, until her older brother begins to pay her too much attention, and she can’t get her mother to listen to her side of the story.

Sent away overseas to escape the overbearing influence of the rumours of incest, Mary Agnes finds herself alone on a journey across the world from rural Ireland, all the way to America, to start a new life far away from home.

Despite being very young, Mary Agnes takes the journey in her stride. She often finds herself in the company of people she knows she cannot necessarily trust, and yet she longs so desperately for a friend to accompany her along the way. She greatly desires guidance, and yet despises when others try to tell her what to do. Making her way along the treacherous voyage across the Atlantic, and then through New York to make her way towards her family in Chicago, Mary Agnes faces many challenges. Her reactions to each roadblock she encounters are engulfed with the maturity she has been forced to quickly grow into, but still remain tinged with the childlike wonder and fears of a thirteen-year-old girl. She is a very complex character, for she faces a lot of challenges at a very young age, but her emotional maturity is restrained by the youth she still possesses.

The dangers that Mary Agnes faces are portrayed with an intricacy that makes you genuinely fear for her safety as she traverses the unknown. On multiple occasions, her life seems to be hanging in the balance of her decisions, and dependent on the leniency of those around her. There are times you physically can’t stop reading, for fear of Mary Agnes’ safety, and because you simply can’t step away without knowing that she is safe. This book definitely keeps your attention as you read, for Mary Agnes is never entirely settled and safe, and there is always something dark lurking around the corner, just waiting for her to feel secure before stirring everything up and sending her into turmoil.

This novel certainly highlights the difficulties that the Irish faced, not only in Ireland, with a severe lack of food, and poverty keeping people from being able to keep their families sufficiently fed, but also in America, where the Irish are seen as inferior, and people would rather hire anyone else instead of someone from Ireland. The discrimination Mary Agnes faces on a daily basis in America, where she finds herself ignored and disbelieved at every turn, echoes the life she has escaped in Ireland, wherein even her own mother had little time for her. The turmoil caused by finding herself looked down on and turned away, based simply on what part of the world she came from, weighs heavily on Mary Agnes. She travelled to America with the dream of going to university, but the world she finds there is much more prejudiced than she expected, and the challenges she faces mean the world closes off to her, rather than opening up more opportunities.

I truly enjoyed listening to the audiobook of this novel. The accent of the narrator certainly draws you deeper into the story, immersing you completely in Mary Agnes’ life. With all the twists and turns, and different situations that Mary Agnes finds herself in, the story is engaging, and one you don’t want to put down and walk away from.

A native New Yorker, Ashley E. Sweeney is the multi-award-winning author of four novels, The Irish Girl, Hardland, Answer Creek: A Novel of The Donner Party, and Eliza Waite. A Mischief of Murder
(A Jan Christopher Murder Mystery – Episode 6)
By Helen Hollick

The village Flower and Veg Show should be a fun annual event – but who added mischief and murder to the traditional schedule?

July 1973

Old friends and new enemies? Jan Christopher’s Aunt Madge is to be a judge at Chappletawton’s annual village flower and vegetable summer show – a chance for the family to have a holiday in the Devon countryside, especially as Jan’s fiancĂ©, DS Laurie Walker, is still recovering from gunshot wounds and her uncle, DCI Toby Christopher, is enduring injury-related sick leave.

The event should be a fun occasion where friendly rivalry between gardeners, cooks and crafters lead to the hopeful winning of the coveted Best In Show trophy – but who added mischief and murder to the traditional schedule?

Praise for the Jan Christopher Mysteries:

"A delight—Miss Read meets The Darling Buds of May, with a dash of St. Mary Mead. Helen Hollick's signature voice shines throughout, full of warmth and wit. The characters keep growing in such satisfying ways, making every visit feel like coming home." Elizabeth St.John

"The Darling Buds of May ...but in Devon instead of Kent." Alison Morton

“I sank into this gentle cosy mystery story with the same enthusiasm and relish as I approach a hot bubble bath, and really enjoyed getting to know the central character, a shy young librarian, and the young police officer who becomes her romantic interest. The nostalgic setting of the 1970s was balm, so clearly evoked, and although there is a murder at the heart of the story, it was an enjoyable comfort read.” Debbie Young, author of the Sophie Sayers cosy mysteries

“A delightful read about a murder told from the viewpoint of a young library assistant. The author draws on her own experience to weave an intriguing tale.” Richard Ashen – South Chingford Community Library

“I really identified with Jan – the love of stories from an early age, and the careers advice – the same reaction I got – no one thought being a writer was something a working-class girl did! The character descriptions are wonderfully done.” Amazon Reader

“Brilliant! I’m so enjoying Helen’s well-researched murder mystery. I’m not giving anything away here, except to say there’s lots of nostalgia, and detail that readers of a certain age will lap up. A jolly good read. In my opinion, it would make a great television series.” Amazon Reader

EXCERPT

Slugs were not at all popular with my family. Those connected to the no-good criminal kind and the other sort. I’m talking the slimy garden variety. You know, homeless snails. (As I thought of them when I was a kid.) Slugs were never popular at any time of the year for a keen gardener like Dad, but come mid-to-late July they were especially abhorred because the last Saturday of the month was the very important Village Flower and Vegetable Show. A big, by village standards, event, where anyone who was anyone in many a rural setting vied to become the proud owner of a silver trophy. My village of Chappletawton was no exception to this annual, national, traditional rivalry for a coveted First Place red rosette.

This sort of show had been going since the Victorian age, when they’d been introduced to encourage good practice in horticulture – and to keep the general hoi polloi’s gardens tidy. Even small flower shows like ours were judged according to the precise (and to my mind, nit-picky) rules laid down by the Royal Horticultural Society. Rules that had been known to elicit various strategies of cheating, and on occasion in the past, even outright sabotage. Not for the gain of prize money, as the winnings were little more than a recuperation of the few pence per class entrance fee. No, winning was for the prestige of a year-long ownership of a silver trophy and the accompanying gardening expertise kudos.

Known for her captivating storytelling and rich attention to historical detail, Helen’s historical fiction, nautical adventure series, cosy mysteries – and her short stories – skilfully invite readers to step into worlds where the boundaries between fact and  fiction blend together.

Helen started writing as a teenager, but after discovering a passion for history, was initially published in 1993 in the UK with her Arthurian Pendragon’s Banner Trilogy and two Anglo-Saxon novels about the events that led to the 1066 Battle of Hastings, one of which, The Forever Queen (USA title – A Hollow Crown in the UK) became a USA Today best-seller. Her Sea Witch Voyages are nautical-based adventures inspired by the Golden Age of Piracy. She also writes the Jan Christopher cosy mystery series set during the 1970s, and based around her, sometimes hilarious, years of working as a North London library assistant. Her 2025 release is Ghost Encounters, a book about the ghosts of North Devon – even if you don’t believe in ghosts you might enjoy the snippets of interesting history and the many location photographs.

Helen and her family moved from London to Devon after a Lottery win on the opening night of the London Olympics, 2012. She spends her time glowering at the overgrown garden, fending off the geese, chasing the peacocks away from her roses, helping with the horses and wishing the friendly, resident ghosts would occasionally help with the housework...

EXCERPT

In my next life, I’ll be reborn as Harry Styles. Or maybe as the reincarnation of Taylor Swift. I’ll still be famous if I must, but I’ll be famous due to my talent instead of my chance birth as a royal. I’m quite sure I’m a negative ten on the talent-o-meter.

Everything else is just genetics. And training.

It’s Friday night in London, and Mayfair glitters. When I step out of the black SUV, straightening to my full height, I pause in the drizzle for the cameras on the red carpet at the charity ball. Snapping shutters echo, and a familiar blinding flash dazzles my eyes.

I give my best public smile and stop in a flattering pose, then strike another pose for my best angles like the Danish prince once taught me during a secret fling. Work it, babe, Prince Theodor coached me then as we drank spicy margaritas, which incidentally led to more spice.

More confidence, more sultry. Hand on my hip and a three-quarter turn to the cameras.

The crowd cheers their approval as I’m blinded by the lights. I wave, smile broadly, and carry on, mindful of not tripping over my own feet.

“Prince Auggie! Over here!”

“Prince Auggie—where’s Katie? I’ll be your date!”

“Prince Auggie, come back!”

Tonight, I’m shamelessly selling the image of charming Prince Auggie, future British monarch. I’d like to meet him too, to be honest, because he’s great in the press. Cool guy. From the outside, he has it together. The media and public are fascinated, so somehow, I must be doing something right. Or quite possibly, I’m doing something wrong enough that the media sticks to me waiting for my next mistake.

I’m all kitted up in an edgy mohair tux that an up-and-coming London designer sent over to me. I’m at least looking the part of the dashing prince, even if I can’t get over the idea that the dashing prince is supposed to be me.

To be fair, I do look good enough, taking after my mum—see genetics above—though I wish I loved crowds like she had. The looks balance out the panic, my friend Gav told me. He said it’s heaps of fun not knowing what I might blurt out next. For him, maybe. Meanwhile, I try to keep my mouth shut as a preventative measure in case something messy accidentally spills out.

“Prince Auggie, is it true you’re still single?”

“Prince Auggie, would you take a photo with me? It’s my birthday!”

I pause and go to the young woman at the barrier for a photo taken by her friend. The paparazzi goes wild. We both grin, and for a moment, I pretend I’m carefree. “Happy birthday,” I say, on my best behavior as she gives a small curtsy. “How do you do.”

She blushes, too tongue-tied to speak.

My father, the King, told me not to be too extra tonight, as if he can sniff out rising rebellion like the dawn breaks each day. I’m kind of horrified that he knows what being extra means. And that he’s applied being extra to me, specifically. Nothing good can come of that. Especially when I’ve been on my best behavior the last few months.

Which is why I asked the stylist at the earlier magazine shoot I’m coming from to give me a smoky-eye look for evening, after we bonded over our favorite makeup. She tousled my medium-length, light reddish-brown—blond if you’re generous during the summer—hair with product. Plus, a touch of contouring never hurt anyone. Use those cheekbones for the good of the kingdom, she told me, because it’s your royal duty to the people.

As Miranda approached the drawing room she heard men’s voices, and neither of them was her father’s. She guessed Mr. Tolwood had stopped by and brought someone with him, but when she strode into the room she nearly gasped aloud.

George and Ebenezer Rockford stood chatting with her parents, glasses of sherry in their hands. So this was why her mother had insisted she change. Nobody looked Miranda’s way when she entered the room and she wanted to tiptoe out and send Cassandra down with a message that she was ill. Very ill. She sighed. It would never work. Mentally preparing herself for an atrocious evening, she walked to her father’s side.

“Ah, here she is at last!” Mr. Harlake said, taking her arm.

Miranda fixed a smile on her face as he steered her over to stand beside Ebenezer.

“You remember Mr. Rockford, don’t you, Miranda?” Mr. Harlake asked, eyes twinkling.

“Yes, of course. Good evening.” Miranda hadn’t seen him up close in a long time. He had dark brown hair, brown eyes, and a short beard. She’d never been fond of beards.

Mr. Rockford took her hand and kissed it. “Good evening to you, Miss Harlake.”

She went to pull her hand away, but he showed no sign of relinquishing it.

“Call her Miranda. So much friendlier,” Mrs. Harlake said with a wide smile.

“Then she must call me Ebenezer.” He motioned to George. “You know my nephew, George? Why, you two must have gone to school together.”

Miranda was glad to remove her hand from Ebenezer’s grip as she turned to face George.

Kate Ellington

Kate Ellington grew up in a woodsy New England town where summer days at the lake seemed to last forever. She read her first historical romance at age eleven when a teacher challenged her to find a book in the library written by an author she’d never heard of. Thus began a life-long love of love stories.

After graduating from college with an art degree she settled in the Pacific Northwest, where she currently resides with her family.

Kate wrote her first romance when she was sixteen, then set her pen down for years until another story floated into her head out of the clear blue sky. She jotted it down, just for fun, but soon it took on a life of its own.

The White Deer of Kildare
By Christy Matheson

There's a deer sorting Christmas decorations in Maura's kitchen...

All Maura wants is a peaceful winter holidays in her dilapidated Irish castle, but her ex is threatening her with family court, and her second grader has invited a strange--completely unclothed--friend, to spend the holidays with them. Oh. And the friend’s dog, which is not actually a dog but probably one of the white deer of Celtic myth.

Maura distracts herself from her husband’s threats by trying to discover why a Fae deer is in her kitchen, when the two women accidentally end up in the Ireland of ancient myth. The White Deer was the human queen of this castle, but it appears she has husband trouble too. Perhaps...the deadly sort of trouble.

Can Maura rescue her new friend — or is Maura herself so tangled in the White Deer's fate that she won't make it home to her children alive?

This novella will appeal to readers who enjoy cozy fantasy, ancient history, Irish folklore, and uplifting stories about motherhood and found family.

Human Saba is slightly taller than I am, very upright, her eyes very round and brown. Her skin is white—not a euphemistic “white” like mine, but white like a piece of paper or bleached linen. It is startling; slightly inhuman. Glancing around the room, a couple of the others have a complexion like hers, a few are fair and blond in the Saxon style, and most are either Black like OisĂn, or olive-skinned and black-haired. As a historian, I am fascinated; I suppose this is a period when the different waves of migration are all present.

As a mother…this is not good. Not good at all. Still holding Saba’s hand, I twist and look all around both of us, but Kaylee’s pompom garland is nowhere to be found. I sip my tea. It tastes like the Mandarin Orange Spice I was drinking before, but it does not transport me back to the 21st-century.

“Saba?” My voice comes out half-choked.

She turns to me, her face lighting up with a smile. “Maura, dear! Aren’t you excited? My husband and his men will be back in time for the Solstice!”

I understand her, and I am vastly relieved. Whatever language they are speaking here, it is just as clear to me as Saba’s grasp of everything we said in modern English.

“Do you remember me?” I ask. “Do you remember why we are here?”

INTERVIEW

Writing Interview Questions!

Why did you choose to write your book in this era?

I didn’t choose the era—the era chose me! I discovered Lucy St.John, my 17th-century ancestor, while researching our family history. When I learned she lived in the Tower of London as the Keeper’s wife and cared for political prisoners during one of the most volatile periods in English history, I was hooked. The personal letters, memoirs, and portraits gave me a vivid picture of a woman navigating war, plague, and political intrigue. I knew I had to tell her story.

Did you find researching this era particularly difficult?

Not difficult—more like endlessly fascinating! The hardest part was narrowing it down. That said, finding women's voices from the era can be challenging. Many records focus on men’s political and military accomplishments. But I was fortunate—my ancestors left memoirs, recipe books, and court records. The most surprising discovery was that parliamentarian Lucy Hutchinson’s memoirs were saved from destruction by her royalist cousin, Nan Wilmot. One cousin wrote the story, the other made sure it survived.

Can you share something about the book that isn’t covered in the blurb?

There’s a deep emotional thread of sisterhood and divided loyalty running through the books. Luce Hutchinson, Nan Wilmot and Frances Apsley were cousins—one a Parliamentarian, the other two  Royalist. I was fascinated by how their love for each other endured despite being on opposite sides of a brutal civil war. That’s what really makes the story resonate: the tension between public conflict and private loyalty.

If you had to describe your protagonists in three words, what would they be and why?

Resilient, Intelligent, Compassionate.

Each woman in the series—Lucy, Luce, Frances, and Nan—demonstrates incredible emotional strength. They made impossible choices, often without support. Their intelligence guided them through complex political landscapes, and their compassion grounded them in humanity.

What was the most challenging part about writing your book?

Staying true to historical fact while shaping a compelling narrative. These were real people, and I felt a deep responsibility to portray them with accuracy and empathy. Balancing documented events with dramatic storytelling took time and many drafts.

Was there anything you edited out of the book that would have drastically affected the story?

I had a storyline involving Frances Apsley that took her deeper into court intrigue than I could ultimately justify with the historical record. It was dramatic—but unsubstantiated. In the end, I chose to remove it. It would’ve made a good subplot, but it didn’t feel authentic.

What are you currently working on?

Officially, I’m taking the summer off. But I am following an intriguing research thread about the theft of Queen Anna of Denmark’s jewels – just when my family were in the thick of the Jacobean Court. I’ve just published a short story about it in the anthology FATE – and if people like it, I may have to write a dual timeline story that ties a modern-day historian into Lucy’s world!

What would you tell an aspiring author who had doubts about their writing abilities?

Doubt is part of the process—but it’s not a stop sign. You don’t have to be perfect to start. You just have to begin. Write what excites you. Write for your own personal growth. Be curious. And remember, your voice matters. You never know who might need your story.

What do you like to do when you are not writing?

I spend time in my garden—digging in the dirt clears my mind and inspires ideas. Long walks with my dog on the beach. Cosy reads on the couch with my cat on my lap. I also love genealogy,  traveling to research locations, and, of course, poking around archives and old churchyards. And precious family time always anchors my life.

What did you want to be when you grew up?

An archaeologist or a historical fiction writer. I’m so lucky I get to do a blend of the two—I get to dig up the past and tell real stories through the lives of my characters.

What’s for dinner tonight? What would you rather be eating?

Probably something sensible like grilled salmon and greens. But I’d rather be having a candlelit feast in a Jacobean manor house—roast duck, spiced pears, marchpane fancies, and a goblet of claret.

What would be a perfect day?

A misty morning walk, time writing uninterrupted with my dog at my feet and my cat on the desk, a surprise research breakthrough, and a homemade dinner with friends and family. If there’s a fire in the hearth and a new book waiting before I go to bed, even better.

What is the best part of your day?

Early morning, before the world wakes up. That quiet moment with a notebook, a fresh mind, and the scent of something blooming outside.

Elizabeth St.John’s critically acclaimed historical fiction novels tell the stories of her ancestors: extraordinary women whose intriguing kinship with England's kings and queens brings an intimately unique perspective to Medieval, Tudor, and Stuart times.

Inspired by family archives and residences from Lydiard Park to the Tower of London, Elizabeth spends much of her time exploring ancestral portraits, diaries, and lost gardens. And encountering the occasional ghost. But that’s another story.

Living between California, England, and the past, Elizabeth is the International Ambassador for The Friends of Lydiard Park, an English charity dedicated to conserving and enhancing this beautiful centuries-old country house and park. As a curator for The Lydiard Archives, she is constantly looking for an undiscovered treasure to inspire her next novel.

Elizabeth's works include The Lydiard Chronicles, a family saga set in 17th-century England during the Civil War, and The Godmother's Secret, which unravels the medieval mystery of the missing princes in the Tower of London. Her latest release, The King’s Intelligencer, follows Franny Apsley in the treacherous court of Charles II as she risks everything to uncover the dangerous truth behind the discovery of the princes’ bones.

INTERVIEW

Writing Interview Questions.

What inspired you to write this book?

When I set out to write the book, since it is the third in the Mauzzy & Me Series, I wanted to continue with maturing Sara Donovan (the protagonist), and by the end of the book, position her for life after the University of Alabama (note I didn’t say after she graduates – sly wink). I also wanted to do the same with the plot—put Sara into a new, extremely high-risk situation where she is dealing directly with dubious people and the stakes are the highest ever for her. With those goals in mind, I went through my voluminous files full of articles about interesting true crimes and mysterious happenings until I hit on 3-4 stories that showed promise. Then I spent several months researching these angles, which led me down various rabbit holes and put me onto even more intriguing stories.

Can you share something about the book that isn’t covered in the blurb?

This is really tricky. The safest thing to say is Lucky Secrets is a multi-layered mystery and that there is much more than what meets the eye. As Kirkus Reviews noted in their review: “An enjoyable, complexly plotted series installment that promises more mysteries and thrills to come.” Kirkus also wrote: “Our Verdict. Get it.” This is about the most I can say without revealing too much. Sorry.

If you had to describe your protagonist(s), in three words, what would those three words be and why?

Determined, observant, different.

Sara is her own person and sees the world differently than others. She does her own thing, regardless what others might think, which is admirable. Readers have called her quirky. She is determined and can be stubborn to a point, but it is also an inner resilience that keeps her going when things get darkest. Sara is also highly observant, and although at times it has gotten her into trouble, she calls it her super power.

What was the most challenging part about writing your book?

Laying out the plot. I am an extreme plotter, and the Lucky Secrets plot is very involved and complex. There is a lot going on so it took some time for me to fully develop the plot and make sure everything worked. For every book I write, I first put together a document I call the blueprint. It is a 40- or 50-page document that includes the premise, backstory, character inventory, plot twists and red herrings, the first 3-4 chapters sketched out in detail, etc. After the blueprint, I lay out every chapter in a document I call the chapter timeline. I use the 3-act structure in my books, so in the chapter timeline I identify where each act, where the plot twists and pinch points need to occur, when the climax needs to start, etc. Then I drop the chapter numbers with thumbnail descriptions into a calendar so I can see the whole book on 2-3 pages and make sure the timeline works. At this point, I am ready to start writing the book.

For Lucky Secrets, since the plot is so complex and includes a multi-level contest full of riddles and puzzles, for me to keep things straight I also had to use a 2-page spreadsheet that I referred to constantly as I wrote the book. Trust me, writing the book was way easier than plotting it out.

Was there anything that you edited out of this book that would have drastically affected the story, should it be left in?

No. The biggest thing I cut was a full chapter (44) toward the end of the book. It would have affected the story had I not addressed it with the first paragraph of the new Chapter 44 where the protagonist briefly recounts what happened in the scene I deleted.

What are you currently working on?

I have several projects in various stages of development. One is a YA mystery for boys after an agent expressed an interest in me giving it a shot. I also have the next Sara book fully plotted and ready to write – I just need to decide how I want to go about it (yes, I understand, this is intentionally vague – another sly wink). I am also in the early stages of fleshing out a spinoff with Mrs. Majelski – she is a fan favorite of my readers, my editors, and myself. The enigmatic old lady is such a blast to write into my stories, so why not write a story with her as the main character??

What would you tell an aspiring author who had some doubts about their writing abilities?

Write every day, even if for only an hour. Writing consistently builds momentum and if you’re writing every day, there is no way you won’t improve. There is a reason for the adage, “Practice makes perfect.”

Find a writer’s critique group. When I started writing in 2013, I honed my skills in critique groups on Wattpad. I learned a lot from some talented people in a certain “by invitation only” group on the site. Accept criticism in these groups for what it is intended to do – make you a better writer. But if the feedback isn’t supportive and instead just mean or rude, then simply find another group. There are plenty out there online and likely in your own town.

Imposter Syndrome is very real, more common than you think, can be debilitating to your writing if you don’t address it, and it can be overcome. Highly recommend this Imposter Syndrome post.

If you are attempting to write a book, know that writing a book is hard. Don’t let perfection get in the way of progress (paraphrasing Churchill). Get the first draft written – don’t agonize over every sentence or the wording – there will be plenty of time later for editing, which is when good becomes great.

Personal Interview Questions.

What do you like to do when you are not writing?

I really enjoy my daily 3–4-mile walk among beautiful trees, walking paths, and a winding creek. It’s very peaceful and a perfect way to clear my head for the day. I also keep up with the news as it often leads to research for my next book.

What did you want to be when you grew up?

When I was 10, I wanted to be—an author.

What’s for dinner tonight? What would you rather be eating?

Elbow macaroni with ground beef, green peppers, Vidalia onion, and fire-roasted tomatoes. I would rather be eating Chinese takeout. Mmmm.

What would be a perfect day?

Sitting by myself watching the final day of one of Golf’s major championships eating Chinese takeout. Or watching the NFL on any given Sunday while my fantasy football team scores 200 points. But THE best day every year for me is watching all the games on the first Thursday of college basketball’s March Madness (the NCAA tourney). And the second-best day is the first Friday of March Madness.

If it isn’t obvious, I enjoy sports – both playing and watching.

What is the best part of your day?

Drinking my morning coffee and reading the news, and also unwinding in my chair in the late afternoon after my walk and before dinner.

EXCERPT

Winston forced a smile. “The founder imparted to me that every contestant was personally selected because each of you has a secret that absolutely must remain—a secret. Especially from law enforcement.” He glanced at me and raised an eyebrow. “Since the winner of the contest will become fabulously wealthy, it would seem, everyone is here because of a potentially—lucky secret.”

Zoe’s head whipped toward me. With eyes wide, she mouthed law enforcement. I threw her a little headshake, even as my body exploded in tingles. I have no such secrets—anymore. I think. A picture popped in my head of the open safe-deposit box with the gold artifact, gold bar, and emeralds. With my name on the signature card. Somebody obviously manufactured a secret for me. But why? And is it the same for all the contestants? Were they also blackmailed into coming for something they didn’t do? Or were they…
