The Apache Kid: ARMY APACHE SCOUT
(The Apache Kid Chronicles-Volume 1)
By W. Michael Farmer

From Army Scout to Outlaw, from Hero to Legend.

He survived the embers of the fires and murders at the Camp Grant Massacre of the Apache. Young Has-kay-bay-nay-ntayl ("brave and tall and will come to a mysterious end"), a child known by many names but later feared and revered as the Apache Kid-grows up in two cultures where survival means choosing between loyalty and betrayal, his people and their overseers. Trained by the legendary Al Sieber and other former military officers, the Kid makes a meteoric rise to prominence as a First Sergeant of scouts, a warrior whose skill and leadership helps win the U.S. Army's fight against renegades and maintain peace between Apache bands at San Carlos Reservation.

But neither war nor peace are ever simple. When forced to make an impossible choice between his own People or the Army, he chooses his People. His choice leads the Army to imprison him at Alcatraz. Released early by the Army, Arizona Territory tries to imprison him again but he, with seven other Apache on the way to Yuma Penitentiary, escape and become the object of the greatest manhunt in Arizona history. The only one to survive the manhunt, Kid becomes both a ghost and a legend, the most feared border outlaw for the next ten years before vanishing into Mexico.

Seen through Kid's eyes, The Apache Kid: Army Apache Scout brings to life the thrilling and tragic journey of Apache Kid as a young man and the best of the Army's Apache scouts.

“You can, of course, decline,” Garrick said when she just stared at him, the silence stretching a moment too long. He smiled—almost kindly. “If you do, there will be no consequences. No one will punish you. I’ll simply tell Jaxon it was my decision.”

His fingers drummed idly on the stack of papers. “The Magisters are very aware of how some of our mages abuse their power, pressuring our fae wards into… arrangements. This is your choice—we would never condone coercion.”

Araya swallowed hard, her pulse thundering in her ears. It was a trap—laid with silk instead of steel, but a trap all the same. This was the price of escaping the fate that other females suffered.

“No,” she said. “I—I’m accepting. I was just… surprised. Jaxon and I haven’t spoken since he left for Elvanfal.”

“I’m afraid that may have been my fault,” Garrick’s expression softened, and for a heartbeat Araya saw a flash of Jaxon in him.

“I’ll admit, I was less than thrilled by his interest in you during his apprenticeship.” Garrick’s lips twitched, leaving no doubt in Araya’s mind that he knew exactly what that interest had entailed. “I had him assigned to Elvanfal to give you the chance to make your own decision. It was the fairest thing to do, given the circumstances.”

Araya stared at him, words failing her. He said it like breaking her heart had been some sort of calculated kindness. Did he know how lost she had been? How hurt? She didn’t doubt it—after all, he knew everything else about her.

“But he was determined, so I followed your career—You’ve truly proven yourself these past years, Araya.” Garrick smiled, ignoring her turmoil. “It’s an excellent match for you. Jaxon is a highly regarded Commander, on track to become a Magister himself. His children will have position—power. Names that open doors you’ve never even seen.”

Araya nodded numbly, biting the inside of her cheek until she tasted blood.

“You will, of course, cease visiting the fae slums,” Garrick continued, picking his papers back up and shuffling through them. “Your duties to Jaxon come first. Your place is by his side. In his bed. Not tending to the less fortunate.”

“Of course, sir,” she said, her voice wooden as the words settled over her like chains. “I understand.”

Between the Living and the Dead
By Sophie Jupillat Posey

The dead won’t leave her alone. For Cavilla, it's one case after another…

Cavilla Ramirez is an average Peruvian teen, tethered to the 1990s rhythm of clarinet rehearsals, dog-eared Agatha Christie novels, and low-stakes schoolyard mysteries. But when a hit-and-run claims her two best friends, her world implodes—and then restructures itself in a seemingly impossible and unnerving way. Her friends aren't gone. Their ghosts linger, needing her help in solving their murder so that they can cross over. And it's not just them. Ghosts are everywhere, and somehow, she's the only one who can see them.

With a protector in the form of a god-turned-cat, Cavilla becomes a reluctant guide between Peru's realms of the living and the dead. Solving murders and helping the dead find closure becomes her new normal. But every answer she uncovers tugs loose something else: long-buried secrets about her own heritage, secrets her aunt Tia Luz would rather keep six feet under.

And as Cavilla finds out, not all ghosts need guidance. One presence stands apart, watching her… waiting.

And he isn't asking for help. He wants her – or something she has.

“I haven’t always been able to talk,” Rumba said in that queer double-edged voice. It almost sounded like Tuvan throat singing. “But after passing through, I met somebody. We joined as one and we travel between realms.”

“Who did you merge with?” Niko asked, bounding from the bed and sitting next to me.

Rumba tottered for a bit as she went to him. Then, when she spoke, a deep voice resonated. “I am Ai-Apaec.”

When I stared at him dumbly, he resumed loftily. “Mochican god, creator of life, protector of the Moche.”

“Why are you merged with my cat?” I asked dumbly.

“I am evolved from one of the ancient cat gods. It is an honor to serve you.”

I raised my eyebrows. “If you’re a god, shouldn’t I be serving you?”

Niko and Angelica made shushing gestures as if I couldn’t see them. They stared back sheepishly.

“I am a guide and guardian,” Ai-Apaec said smoothly, modulating into Rumba’s more dulcet tones.

“You mentioned realms. What realms?” I asked.

The deadened light flickered and whisked as a gale into my accursed bathroom hallway. The always ambient darkness pulsed and hummed. I shied away, ready to abandon everything.

Irrationality flared through me. My friends and this god were out to kill me! The ghosts or monsters were going to get me! The humming intensified until it reverberated in my bones, making my entrails and teeth chatter. A whiff of salt, like ocean brine, reached me. The darkness frittered away, bit by bit, until a copper-tinged tunnel revealed itself to us, gleaming wickedly.

Read an excerpt from The Walls of Rome by Robert M. Kidd #AncientHistoricalFiction #HistoricalAdventure #BlogTour #TheCoffeePotBookClub @RobertMKidd1 @cathiedunn

The Walls of Rome
By Robert M. Kidd

‘not only have we scaled the mighty Alps, I believe we have climbed the very walls of Rome’ – Hannibal

218 BC. Sphax is seventeen and haunted by the brutal murder of his parents at the hands of Rome. After ten years of miserable slavery he will make his last bid for freedom and go in search of Hannibal’s army and his birthright. He will have his revenge on the stinking cesspit that is Rome!

Destiny will see him taken under the wing of Maharbal, Hannibal’s brilliant general, and groomed to lead the finest horsemen in the world – the feared Numidian cavalry that would become the scourge of Rome.

From the crossing of the great Rhodanus River, Sphax’s epic journey takes him through the lands of the Gaul to the highest pass in the Alps. This is the story of the most famous march in history. A march against impossible odds, against savage mountain Gauls, a brutal winter and Sphax’s own demons.

This is more than a struggle for empire. This is the last great war to save the beauty of the old world, the civilized world of Carthage, Greece and Gaul. The world of art and philosophy – before it is ground into dust by the upstart barbarity of Rome.

Context

On the last great Alpine pass Hannibal’s army meet an obstacle that stops them in their tracks and threatens the entire campaign. They are faced with a huge rockfall, obliterating the path.

‘How far to the next pass?’ he asked. Grim-faced, the guides were staring at each other, unable to meet his gaze. It was Leuca who finally answered.

‘We’re not sure … maybe forty miles … perhaps fifty. We never go that way.’

‘But that could take weeks!’ Sphax cried in despair, looking around at the downcast faces. ‘Then we are lost,’ he said finally as his shoulders and legs slumped and he crumpled to the ground. His men were beginning to arrive and gather around him. Sphax hadn’t the heart to tell them himself, so he waved a lame arm in the direction of the barrier that had dashed all their hopes, and left it to the guides to give them the bad news.

It was much later when Hannibal found them. Most of Sphax’s eshrin and some of Adherbal’s men were still sitting dejectedly on slabs of rock below the rock fall. A pall of silence hung over the gathering and Sphax’s face was buried in his hands. Hannibal strode over to his nephew and gripping him by the shoulders, raised him to his feet.

‘Rise up! Despair is beneath you, Sphax, and I will not hear of it. This is a setback, not a calamity. The gods cast their thunderbolts to test our intelligence and ingenuity. This is a challenge, and we must rise to meet it, not cast ourselves into a pit of despair.’ Hannibal released his grip on his nephew’s shoulders and gazed stoically into the faces of the Numidians who had all risen to their feet in his presence.

‘Did I not say to you all when we set out on our journey together that I will find a pass or make one. Now we must make one!’

When Cato the Censor demanded that ‘Carthage must be destroyed’, Rome did just that. In 146 BC, after a three year siege, Carthage was razed to the ground, its surviving citizens sold into slavery and the fields where this once magnificent city had stood, ploughed by oxen. Carthage was erased from history.

That’s why Robert is a novelist on a mission! He wants to set the historical record straight. Our entire history of Hannibal’s wars with Rome is nothing short of propaganda, written by Greeks and Romans for their Roman clients. It intrigues him that Hannibal took two Greek scholars and historians with him on campaign, yet their histories of Rome’s deadliest war have never seen the light of day.

The hero of The Histories of Sphax series tells a different story!

When Robert is not waging war with his pen, he likes to indulge in his passion for travel and hill walking, and like his hero, he also loves horses.

Robert lives in Pembrokeshire, West Wales.

Last Train to Freedom

'Taut, compelling and beautifully written – I loved it!’ ~ DAISY WOOD

'Tense and thought-provoking' ~ CATHERINE LAW

1940. As Soviet forces storm Lithuania, Zofia and her brother Jacek must flee to survive.

A lifeline appears when Japanese consul Sugihara offers them visas on one condition: they must deliver a parcel to Tokyo. Inside lies intelligence on Nazi atrocities, evidence so explosive that Nazi and Soviet agents will stop at nothing to possess it.

Pursued across Siberia on the Trans-Siberian Express, Zofia faces danger at every turn, racing to expose the truth as Japan edges closer to allying with the Nazis. With the fate of countless lives hanging in the balance, can she complete her mission before time runs out?

MY THOUGHTS!

Zofia and her brother, Jacek, had taken refuge in Lithuania from Poland, but that safety had come to an end. Russian troops moved in and, quickly, Lithuania was no longer safe. With little choice but to hide, Zofia is desperate to leave, to move on away from Lithuania and further from the oppressing fear of both Soviet and Nazi regimes so close.

The Japanese consul, Sugihara, seeing the plight of the Jewish refugees queueing outside in the hopes of safe passage somewhere, anywhere, that wasn’t near the incoming danger, starts to hand out visas, granting passage for countless Jews through Japan. But as he is forced to move on, Zofia finds her own visa hanging in the balance, until a compromise is reached – if Zofia and Jacek can deliver a parcel to Tokyo, their visas will be granted. Without another choice, they agree, moving on to board the Trans-Siberian Express, with eye-witness accounts and photographs of the Nazi atrocities on Jews tucked safely into a parcel in Jacek’s bag to show General Sato the truth about what was happening in Germany before Japan makes the choice to side with them.

This book is a whirlwind of action and emotional turmoil! This is the kind of book that keeps you up until the middle of the night, or that you fall asleep reading, because you just can’t put it down. Travelling to Tokyo from Lithuania, Zofia finds herself in near-constant danger as she passes through borders and checkpoints. A lot of people want to keep the parcel Jacek is carrying from falling into the hands of Japanese, to keep the truth from coming out, and they would do anything to stop Zofia and Jacek from reaching their destination. With Nazi soldiers and the NKVD closely following her every move, Zofia barely manages to keep herself out of their reach – but she is on a train with only one destination, and the stops are pre-determined. If they want to find her, they know exactly where she will be, and when. This is such an intense novel, for there are no moments of respite. The action and fear is constant, reflecting to the reader the terror that Jewish refugees actually making this trip must have felt.

Having different perspectives allows the reader to know who to trust and who to not trust, and knowing who will cause danger for Zofia absolutely tugs at your heartstrings, for you can’t quite tell when things are going to happen, and it is impossible to jump through the pages to warn her. Zofia is a character you can’t help but absolutely love. She is determined, but that doesn’t mean she is not scared, and at every turn when her life is in danger, you end up sat on the edge of your seat, with fingers crossed that this isn’t when she meets her end.

I didn’t previously know anything about Lithuania, or much about Japan, during WWII. Zofia originally fled from Poland, which is a much wider-known place in history, but this book shows just how displaced the Jews who escaped Soviet gulags and the Nazi concentration camps ended up. With both the Soviets and the Nazis a prominent enclosing force in this novel, alongside such brilliant description and historical details about this period of history, this book will absolutely entrance you, while you perch precariously on the edge of your seat waiting for danger to arrive.

For fans of WWII history, who enjoy thrilling stories full of action, danger, spies, and a little bit of a love story, this is absolutely the book to read. Even if not, this book should not be overlooked, for it is absolutely wonderful, and one of the best books I have read this year.

Uprising
Rebellion, Book #2
By Paul Bernardi

Summer 1067.

Northumbria.

Oslac, thegn of the village of Acum, feels cheated - having been robbed of the chance to kill his enemy by his own kinsman.

Instead, Gundulf, the erstwhile Lord of Hexham and murderer of Acum's villagers, is now awaiting justice for his crimes in Bebbanburh, Earl Oswulf’s fortress capital far to the north.

But when Oslac narrowly escapes death at the hands of Gundulf’s assassin, he realises he will never be safe while the Dane lives. Summoning his closest companions, Oslac heads north to demand Oswulf put an end to Gundulf’s life - only to find the prisoner has escaped.

Tracking the fugitive into the wild hills and dales of Northumbria – places far beyond the reach of Oswulf’s power – Oslac falls into Gundulf’s trap when the earl’s warband is ambushed with catastrophic consequences.

Elsewhere, unrest in the north of England is growing. Impotent in the face of Norman avaricious brutality, the Saxon nobility can do nothing to prevent their ancestral lands being passed to foreign invaders. It can only be endured for so long, and a reckoning is coming.

Once again, Oslac must put aside his personal vendetta to join with the few remaining great lords of Anglo-Saxon England in what may prove to be the final, climactic stand against their Norman overlords.

The song of swords will echo across the land once more.
