The Captain’s Woman
By Holly Bush

Meet the Thompsons of Locust Street, an unconventional family taking Philadelphia high society by storm…

1870 ~ Muireall Thompson has taken her duties seriously since her parents died on the family’s crossing from Scotland to America in 1854. As the eldest sibling, their death made her responsible for her family and left little time for a life of her own. But now her brothers and sisters are adults; even the youngest is nearly ready to face the world on his own. What will she do when she is alone, other than care for an elderly aunt and volunteer at the Sisters of Charity orphanage? Has the chance for a husband and children of her own passed her by?

Widower Anthony Marcus, formerly a captain in the Union Army, is a man scraping the bottom of his dignity and hanging on to his honor by the barest thread. Reduced to doing odd jobs to keep a roof over his dear daughter Ann’s head, he often leaves her with the Sisters of Charity while he is out seeking steady work with a decent salary that will allow him to move from their single-room living quarters.

After an initial meeting that finds Muireall and Anthony at odds, a tentative friendship forms as they bond over their mutual affection for Ann. As friendship leads to passion, can a wealthy spinster and a poor soldier overcome their differences in station to forge a future together? Just as Muireall finds the courage to reach for her own happiness, Anthony’s past rises up between them and an old enemy reemerges to bring the Thompson family down once and for all. Will the divide between them be insurmountable, or can they put aside pride and doubt for a love worth fighting for?

Read my review of Illuminated by Iris Marsh #Fantasy #YoungAdult #Thriller @XpressoTours

Illuminated
By Iris Marsh

In this coming-of-age YA contemporary fantasy, a teenage girl has her life turned upside down when her family is breaking apart, and she discovers her supernatural powers. There’s no time to deal with it, however, as she’s targeted by a dangerous power-siphoner.

Nikki Chase, a 16-year-old striver, feels like her life is falling apart around her. Her parents’ marriage seems in trouble, her best friend prefers to spend time with the popular girl, and she’s quite certain she’s on the verge of a psychosis. After all, normal people don’t see colors around people or hear voices, right?

When a volunteering assignment leads her to a mental hospital, Nikki is determined to figure out what’s going on with her—and if perhaps she belongs in that facility. What she discovers is nothing she expected: Lorene, a volunteer, tells Nikki she’s not crazy but, in fact, has the power to influence people’s thoughts and beliefs. However, someone has been sucking the power out of people just like her, leaving them behind as an empty shell. Desperate for help and someone to trust, Nikki teams up with Lorene to discover who is behind the siphoning. But can she stop them before she becomes a victim? And can she do so without becoming addicted to the power herself?

Fans of suspenseful contemporary fantasy will love this YA coming-of-age fantasy thriller book about coping with difficult emotions, navigating relationships with family and friends, and the addictive quality of power.

MY THOUGHTS

Nikki has always strived for the best, but she is struggling. Her parents marriage is falling apart, and is finding it hard to cope with the fact that they might separate. Her best friend is drifting away from her, preferring to spend her time with one of the school’s popular girls. And most of all, Nikki is certain she is suffering from some kind of mental illness, because she is seeing things, colours, where they shouldn’t be.

Nikki hopes that the volunteer work the school has set up in a mental hospital might lead her to some answers, but the ones she ends up getting are a lot different than what she expected. Lorene, one of the volunteers at the hospital, explains the truth to Nikki, a truth that has been hidden from her for her entire life – she has powers, the ability to see into others’ minds, and adapt what they do and think. But with the power comes danger. There is a siphoner, taking these kinds of powers from people, and leaving them a human body with little mind left. And the use of her powers will not only reveal Nikki to the siphoner, but will also make her more susceptible to an addiction that comes along with using the power.

With her father preferring to keep her in the dark, rather than teach her how to use her powers properly, Nikki turns to Lorene for guidance. Lorene takes Nikki under her wing, and begins the task of teaching Nikki how to control the power she holds within her. But the longer they spend learning, the more time the siphoner has to find her, and the more danger she is in.

Nikki is a character I initially struggled to connect with. She is very self-centred, she often does not see things that are right in front of her, and she comes to terms with everything almost too easily. There are a lot of things that stare her right in the face throughout the entire book, and she jumps to the wrong conclusions and is too caught up with her own problems to see what is going on around her. She is not particularly fazed by the idea of ‘magic’ being real, but more angry at her father that she was not told before. I won’t lie, I did figure out the main plot twist, which is not revealed until the end of the book, within the first few chapters. This in itself meant that I spent most of the book yelling at Nikki to figure it out as well, so she could progress with her story somewhat safely, although I knew this wasn't particularly likely to happen! On a second read-through, if you only figure out the twist at the end, this book would be very different, as knowing the outcome of the twist changes a lot. By the end, I definitely liked Nikki more, for she went through a lot of character development throughout the book, although it is her flaws that make her come across as real in the telling.

The whole concept of Nikki’s powers is one I haven’t come across before. Nikki has an influence over others’ thoughts, she can see what they are feeling, and can adjust their beliefs to change their entire way of thinking. By having such control, she can also put suggestions of things to do in their heads, effectively controlling them without them ever knowing. The possibilities for villains and heroes with such powers are almost endless, and it made for a very interesting story.

In this book, those with powers are a rare occurrence, a lot having died out, been victims of the siphoner, or gone into hiding to try and stay safe. But although she may feel it, Nikki is never alone in her journey. She does not always appreciate it, but her father is always ready to protect her, and Nikki finds a teacher and a friend in Lorene. She also has Alex, a boy who very much likes her, although she finds it difficult to open up enough to grow close to him. I did particularly like Alex. He is always ready to jump to Nikki's side when she needs him, although he is not always aware of the danger he is putting himself in when he does so.

This book does have a cliffhanger ending, although the book itself does come to somewhat of a close. It is not an ending to be satisfied with, but one that is not annoying as you wait for the next book to come out. Enough was revealed and dealt with that I can wait patiently for book 2, but it was left suspenseful enough that I need book 2 soon to know how the story continues. The perfect example of what a cliffhanger ending should be, in my opinion!

Although I wasn’t immediately hooked on reading this book, it did take a few chapters, this was a book I did really enjoy reading. Nikki’s journey is one that I would happily read again, and would love to continue following in book 2.

EXCERPT

A pod of five humpback whales migrated north, searching for plankton. They were led by two bulls, each around 15 meters long. The cows were both between 10 and 12 meters, while the calf, making the journey for the first time, was only four-and-a- half meters. He primarily drank his mother’s milk. The males were tasked with defending the pod against potential threats. Their echolocation sensed something closing in on their position. Something big.

The aggressor was larger than any the whales had ever encountered, his speed greater than they could hope to match. The animal’s black back provided camouflage; he was unaware the whales were tracking him, still unfamiliar with this new world.

The Liopleurodon hoped that preying on mammals would rebuild his body weight—still low from the Jurassic ice age— and that the mammalian blubber could compensate his energy level, which was stifled by the colder climate and reduction in oxygen. He opened his jaws, sliding his teeth together, sharpening them. The Liopleurodon’s smell locked onto the five humpbacks—their sizes, their movements, their locations. He made his pick. He wanted the calf. He formed his plan of attack.

The whales initiated a defensive strategy. The females moved toward the calf while the bulls dove to challenge the Liopleurodon, their powerful flukes propelling them deeper. The pliosaur ascended, bringing all three males on a collision course. The Liopleurodon was as agile as a sea lion, using his flippers to effortlessly dodge the bulls without slowing down. He left them behind. The females placed themselves between the pliosaur and the calf. The Liopleurodon slammed into them, knocking them aside and shattering multiple bones in all three animals upon impact. He bit down upon the calf’s fluke, breaking it. The baby struggled and the Liopleurodon thrashed his neck, trying to tear the calf in two.

The females came back, headbutting the Liopleurodon in his torso, but the reptile’s reinforced rib cage absorbed the blows. The attacks were a distraction, however, and he dove deeper, his teeth gripping the calf’s tail, trying to drown the baby and escape the females. This brought him back within the males’ range, who each slammed into him. He lost his grip on the calf.

The calf’s fluke was too hurt to function. The Liopleurodon was so large that his descent created its own current, dragging the calf from the surface. The bulls chased the pliosaur while the cows balanced the calf on their heads, trying to raise him to the surface to breathe.

The bulls pursued the Liopleurodon deeper, placing more distance between the reptile and the calf. The water darkened. The Liopleurodon tracked his pursuers with his smell; they tracked him with echolocation. He was satisfied that the males were too far away from the calf to interfere again. He turned back, dodging them once more, and closed in on the cows and calf. The cows were distracted by lifting the calf and did not detect the Liopleurodon’s return.

The Liopleurodon grabbed the larger female’s fluke in his jaws and dragged her away from the others. He released her once he felt she was no longer a threat. The mother whale could not balance her child on her own. He sank. The calf’s lungs filled with water and he used his remaining strength to sing a death song to his pod.

The carnivore bit down on the calf’s back, shattering its spine. Blood puffed from his mouth. The four adult humpbacks watched powerlessly as the ocean’s returning apex predator swam away with the youngest member of their pod.

EXCERPT

South Station was bustling with people. The building had high ceilings, lots of shops, and from the aroma swirling through the air, some tasty eateries. Chatter filled the atmosphere, and as we approached the lower platform, horns blared from trains pulling in and out. Announcers over the loudspeaker called out train numbers and destinations. Emily had said little to me all morning, knowing I was still beating myself up over last night. She knew how stubborn I was and that I might snap if provoked. It’s not one of my best attributes. But when I was ready to talk, she would know.

I glanced over at my sister. She gave me a small, knowing smile. Her voice echoed in my head. We’re both alive. I knew I was acting stupid. As long as that was a onetime mistake and I didn’t put Emily at risk again, I had to let it go.

Emily shifted her weight. Her lips were tightly pressed together as she wrinkled and unwrinkled her freckled nose. I bumped her with my elbow, then turned to her, extending my arm. “Hi, I’m Tasi, and I’m done being stupid and feeling sorry for myself.”

She let out a giggle. “Finally.” She ignored my arm and gave me an enormous hug. I leaned my cheek against her forehead. “If I had to sit on a train in silence until we reached New York, I think I would have lost my freaking mind.”

“Yeah, me too.” The tightness in my stomach lifted.

Our embrace ended as they announced our train. We headed for the back and found some empty seats together. The seats were arranged in fours, which could be an issue, depending on who filled the seats facing us. I hoped no one would sit there, or at least would leave us alone if they did.

While we waited, I watched the hordes of people filing onto the train. Some whispering to each other, dressed in casual attire. Others with their suits on, storing briefcases overhead. The murmurs grew louder as more people boarded the train car. My body was tense, and it became hard to separate the oblivious people from the ones who may be threats.

“If we have time, can we go to the giant toy store in Times Square?” Emily asked. “It has an indoor Ferris wheel!”

“Yes, once we find Sonya. I want to make sure we find a place to stay before we start sightseeing.”

“Okay.” She clasped her hands together.

As we continued talking, a girl not much older than me stopped in front of us. Her hair was a thick golden blonde. It was pulled back in a half ponytail, and the curls bounced with her slightest of movements. Her lips were narrow and cheekbones high.

Sickness stirred in my gut, and the hairs on the back of my neck sought refuge.

“Are these two seats open? My friend is running late, which is so typical. It’s hard to find a good traveling partner these days. So annoying.” Her emerald eyes sparkled like gems.

“Sure.” Prickles coated my skin as she eyed me.

She sat down across from Emily. “I like the window seat. I hope you don’t mind.” She directed that to my sister.

“No . . . no, it’s fine.” Emily gave her a small smile and focused back on me. She saw what I had.

Our seats were in a section too close to other travelers for either of us to do anything. We were safe for the time being. However, my first thought was to lead the girl somewhere private so I could kill her.

She sat still as she looked out the window, her flawless complexion hard as stone. Yup, she was one of them, but did she know who we were? The train jerked forward, reminding me we were in this for the long haul. The trip was about four hours; that was four long hours with a filthy vampire sitting across from us. That’s the problem with big cities. These large transportation centers provided enough shelter so vampires could hide out there during the day.

“So, are you guys headed to the city? Business or pleasure?” She studied my eyes, as if waiting for me to stumble or hesitate.

“A little of both.” I showed no fear as I locked my eyes on hers. “You?”

“Business, mostly. I hope my friend made it. It’d be such a shame if he had to catch a later train. Plus, our boss would be really unhappy with him if we screwed up our task.”

Great. I hoped he missed the train, because if it was a friend of hers, I didn’t want to meet him.

Turning to Emily, I noticed her apprehension. She was readying herself for the worst. Part of me wished I hadn’t given her those stakes. Our eyes met, and I hoped she deciphered my visual message to relax. Still feeling a little rebellious, I pressed my luck. “So, what kind of business, if you don’t mind me asking?”

Her ringlets fell off her shoulders as she leaned closer, showing me her venomous fangs. “Pest extermination.” She scowled.

I was delighted to receive a copy of Shy Girls Can't Date at Christmas pre-publication from Milly Rose for review. Check out the book below, and then scroll down to read my review!

Shy Girls Can't Date At Christmas
(Shy Girls Sweet Romances)
By Millie Rose

Is the season of giving enough to bring us back together?

I wish I never saw it. But there he was, standing right in front of me, threatening other kids. Did I expect anything less from our school's worst bully? And now that the vice principal handed down his punishment, he assumes I ratted him out.

Being on the organizing committee for the Christmas dance was supposed to be fun. But now Beau Stevenson is forced to join us. We’re enlisted to teach him school spirit, but all we give him is terrified faces.

I’ve always strived to be an academically gifted good girl. My overprotective single dad warned me about bad boys like him. But now being stuck together after hours in the gym, buried memories resurface. When we’re alone, he’s no longer scary. Instead, he’s attentive and kind.

No one at school knows the secret Beau and I share. For years I’ve only seen him as a brute, but can I give this boy a second chance? There’s a deeper side to him. Is he willing to permanently become the boy I once loved?

You will love following Ava and Beau's love story. This is a high school bully redemption story, plus the story of a good girl falling for a bad boy. In forced proximity, they are both learning to love as their opposites attract. This is a young adult sweet romance set at Christmas time.

Genres: Young Adult, Contemporary Romance

MY THOUGHTS

Ava’s life turned upside-down after she lost her mother. Her street no longer throws the massive festive street parties that her mother used to plan, and her father seems more concerned with her grades than her wellbeing. But as timid as Ava is at school, she refuses to let this Christmas pass her by. She has big plans for the Christmas dance, and being part of the committee is the only thing she does other than being at school, or doing homework, so it is a chance to finally make some friends, rather than just studying all the time.

There is, of course, one problem. Beau, the school’s worst bully, has been forcefully put on the committee in an attempt to teach him school spirit, as a punishment and a lesson all wrapped up in a very festive detention. Ava has a history with Beau, but now they are in close proximity, he has taken an interest in her. Not that he wants to bully her – he wants to talk to her, to get to know her. To spend time with her. And as much as Ava may be able to benefit from the fact that everyone else is so terrified of Beau they will do whatever he says, she absolutely does not agree with his violence in the slightest.

Ava and Beau’s relationship is a strange one. It is not enemies to lovers, for they were never particularly enemies, but it is also not friends or strangers to lovers. Ava and Beau were childhood friends, but their friendship fell apart with the death of Ava’s mother, when Beau’s family moved house, away from Ava. And as quick to violence as Beau is, he is gentle with Ava, kind when he is around her. It is thanks to him that the committee even gets off the ground in the first place, despite him not wanting to be there.

Beau may not be the best influence on anyone, but him being around, and taking a protective role over her, gives Ava the confidence to start to come out of her shell. She ends up in control of the committee, and takes her role very seriously, making sure everyone knows what they need to be doing, and ensuring everything runs smoothly. And as much as he doesn’t want to be there, Beau commits himself to the committee as well, for Ava’s sake, and works just as hard as everyone else to make sure her dream dance comes to life.

Ava and Beau’s romance is one that I greatly enjoyed reading about. They bring out the best in each other, Ava bringing out Beau’s gentle, caring side, and Beau giving Ava the confidence to do what she dreams of, and not being afraid to speak her mind. Together, they give each other what they need to become better people. It is not that they cannot live without each other, but rather that they can live better together, which makes it the kind of romance that utterly enchanted me throughout the book.

Ava’s Dad is a character I could not bring myself to like in the slightest. He loathes Beau with a passion, and doesn’t agree with Ava doing anything but things that are important to her education. He comes across at times like he is pleased she is making friends, but he dotes on Ava. In a way, it is almost like he is pretending she is still a little girl, like she was when they lost her mother. His moods go up and down, and he is often displeased with Ava and fully disapproving of what she does, and who she does it with. Ava finds herself having to hide things from him, just to keep the peace. It is not like he is the only dysfunctional parent in this book, but he is the one that takes centre stage, and I hated how he treats Ava.

I have not read many books based around Christmas before, for no particular reason, it is just a time of year that does not often come up in the books I read. This book made me feel especially Christmassy, especially with some of the visuals, of decorations along the street, and of the dance that Ava plans. This book made me want to put up fairy lights, and gather up my Christmas decorations. I could almost feel the frost in the air as I read. There is this magical feeling that comes with the month of December, the feeling that something special is coming, and I felt that all the way through this book, even though December is not quite here yet. I could feel the excitement, the whole magical feeling, and it felt like I was alongside Ava throughout the whole book. The author has done a wonderful job at bringing the wonder of the season to life among the pages.

This is a book I absolutely loved reading. I read it within a day, because I simply could not put it down. If you only read just one romance book this Christmas, it should be this one, because it is absolutely amazing.

INTERVIEW

What first spurred you to write this book A Wing and A Prayer in the Broken Wing series?

It came about purely by chance. I was off work ill and was finding it hard to write my then work in progress and an author friend suggested I look for something new and unrelated. A few days later a program came on the television called, ‘Spitfire Women’  and after watching that, it sparked the idea for what became the ‘Broken Wings’ series.

Can you tell us about some of the research you did about women of the ATA? Any facts that especially intrigued you?

Where to start? I have so much admiration for what these ladies did. Well, for a start, they often flew in weather which grounded Allied air operations. If an aircraft needed to be delivered, it was often up to the pilot assigned to the delivery to make the decision. Depending upon the distances, they often delivered two, three or more planes a day. Much to the annoyance of some officers who loved being saluted the ATA were never taught to salute and even though there a Daily Routine Order in April 1943 announced they were required to salute senior officers, it made no difference as they never saluted. I'll give you one more wonderful example of their spirit. One woman once accused a lady pilot of basically doing this for a hobby. This made her mad and so she challenged the woman to a fight and when she refused, she offered to take on the woman’s husband, who chickened out!

Tell us a little about the dangers of the job these women did.

It always amazes people when I talk about these pilots and I tell them that the planes they flew didn’t have radios; nor were their guns provided with ammunition. So, if they got into trouble, not only could they not call for help, but they couldn’t try to shoot their way out either. It wasn’t common for planes flown by the ATA to be shot down, but it also wasn’t unheard of. This, of course, gives me lots of scope for getting my characters into trouble – which actually occurs in book 3 of the series. At the beginning, they also were not trained to fly on instruments and because of this, if they flew into cloud or fog, they could and did fly into the ground or hills.

Tell us about the planes they flew.

At first, the idea was the ATA would only deliver training aircraft, which meant mostly Tiger Moth type biplanes. However, it quickly became obvious this would be a waste of resources and they quickly moved on to Spitfires and Hurricanes; just in time for the Battle of Britain. Indeed, their contribution to the battle should not be underestimated, the ability to deliver replacement aircraft was vital. Gradually, the pilots flew everything which the RAF fought and flew, including four-engine bombers like the Lancaster and, on occasion, the B17 Flying Fortress if required. The only type they never flew were flying boats as taking off and landing on water was considered too specialized even for this incredible group of aircrew. The even created procedures for flying planes which, initially, the RAF’s pilots considered too difficult to fly. More on this will be revealed in my books.

How did you decide to include the American Doris, and can you talk a little about her personality?

I love Doris! During my research about the ATA, I found out about their American equivalent, the Women’s Airforce Service Pilots, or, WASPs. They were treated dreadfully in comparison to their UK compatriots. Poorly treated, badly thought of and in general, not taken seriously by their male equivalents, in virtually complete opposition to their UK colleagues. So, I decided I wanted to have an American girl as one of my main characters in small tribute. She gets to do 99% more than she would have been allowed to do, I she’d have joined the WASPs. She goes into her motivation on joining the ATA near the start of ‘A Wing and a Prayer’.

Can you tell us about your character Penny's motivation to join?

Penny was a quite well know pilot pre-war, think Amelia Earheart and Amy Johnson, but has a poor relationship with her father after the death of her mother. He disapproves of her flying, especially because she kept getting into the newspapers, in his opinion, bringing the family name into disrepute. Under the threat of being married off, she wants to prove she is her own woman and determines to do what she can for the war effort.

What kind of training did these pilots get?

Despite all the dangers, your characters are filled with humor and camaraderie, is that a reflection of the real ATA pilots? Oh yes. They had to suffer some terrible nicknames, amongst them, the Lesbian Pool and the Always Terrified Airwomen. Despite the constant dangers they faced each day, they were a close bunch who had each other’s backs. Many of the stories I've come across would not be believed if I wrote about them. I've used a few so far, and more will appear. Like most pilots, they were happiest in the air and always up for any job. Their excellent morale was also helped by their being the first female workers to be awarded the exact same pay for doing the same job as their male colleagues.

Along with a mystery, there is also romance in your book A Wing and A Prayer, was this also true in history?

Yes, there were instances of RAF pilots marrying ATA pilots, in fact - don’t tell anyone but this is a spoiler – Penny has a romance with an RAF pilot. When they met was one of the most fun scenes I wrote for this book. However, not all romances are meant to be and that’s certainly true with this series of books. I'm not going to say anymore though, as that would give away more plots from book 2 which I hope will the readers will love.

What hints can you give us about what's in store in your next book in this series?

In book 2, ‘Wild Blue Yonder, we become quite heavily involved with the USAAF (United States Army Air Force) in Europe. Where I live in the UK there is an ex-USAAF base called, RAF Polebrook where much of this book is set and, a certain major film star is based for a while. Without giving away his name (because, frankly my dear…) he is at the center of this books mystery. Compared to ‘A Wing and a Prayer’, the mystery is not as central to the story however, it is vital to the story which is more based around the developing relationships of the group of characters.

“Mind the duck!”

Mary’s warning was a smidgeon too late. Betty turned her head toward the shout just when she needed to do the exact opposite and keep her eyes on the path.

“Aargh!” cried Betty as she was sent sprawling to the ground.

A loud, angry, “Quack! Quack!” was followed by a flurry of wings and feathers as the slightly stunned duck half flew and half staggered to the sanctuary provided by the river.

“I did tell her to watch out for the duck,” Mary muttered in her own defense as they rushed to help Betty to her feet.

Penny and Doris took an arm each as Mary reached to retrieve Betty’s handbag. It had landed precariously close to the edge of the river, and the dastardly duck was snuffling at it before Mary seized it and handed it back to Betty.

“Mary!” cried Betty. “Grab that envelope!”

Swiveling, Mary saw a large brown envelope and stooped for it before it could fall into the water. “Got it!” she yelled, waving it in the air. Unfortunately, the envelope being upside down, the contents spilled onto the ground around her, luckily missing going into the river. She bent down to pick them up and was surprised to discover they were all newspaper cuttings.

Mick is a hopeless romantic who was born in England and spent fifteen years roaming around the world in the pay of HM Queen Elizabeth II in the Royal Air Force before putting down roots and realizing how much he missed the travel. He’s replaced it somewhat with his writing, including reviewing books and supporting fellow saga and romance authors in promoting their novels.

He’s the proud keeper of two Romanian Were Cats bent on world domination, is mad on the music of the Beach Boys, and enjoys the theatre and humoring his Manchester United-supporting wife. Finally, and most importantly, Mick is a full member of the Romantic Novelists Association. A Wing and a Prayer was the first of the Broken Wings series and he is very proud to be a part of the Vintage Rose Garden at The Wild Rose Press.

For most people, I think writing about oneself is difficult, and that’s no exception for writers. I must have written a dozen different versions of this. But hey, if you’re here, you must be interested in knowing a little about my life. If you’re curious about something that’s not covered here, shoot me a message through email or social media and I’ll be happy to answer!

I live in Northern Utah with my wonderful husband and our rambunctious toddler. We’re a family that likes to be on the go, so you’ll probably find us at the zoo, on a hike, or out for a run together. And yes, the housework suffers while we play. There are usually crumbs on the counter, dishes in the sink, and toys on the floor.

I graduated from Brigham Young University with a degree in health education and history teaching. I taught junior high school for two years before switching careers. I now work from home for a local credit union and write down the stories in my head when I have time.

Read an excerpt from Never Gonna Happen by Linda Kage #ContemporaryRomance #YoungAdult @lindakage @XpressoTours

Never Gonna Happen
By Linda Kage

Peyton’s mom and my mom were best friends.

You’d think that should cover the gist of it. But, no… Oh, no.

Not even close.

You see, Mom and Aunt Donna (as I’d always called Peyton’s mother) were not simply just best friends; I’m saying they were the-same-person-inhabiting-two-different-bodies kind of best friends.

And thus, Peyton Royce had been forced on me since the moment she was born.

We were treated like twins, yet always expected to fall in love one day and get married. The only problem with that was I didn’t love Peyton. And I’m fairly certain she didn’t even like me in return.

Don’t get me wrong. I adored our moms—swear to God—but they had to let this stupid notion go, because one thing had become abundantly clear to me over the years. I would never marry Peyton Royce.

I think it was my one goal in life, actually.

So… Sorry, Mom and Aunt Donna, but you two just weren’t going to get your way on this.

Peyton and I? It was never gonna happen.

EXCERPT

Aria took her turn next. When she immediately turned toward me and Peyton, my stomach dipped with dread.

“York,” she smirked snidely. “Truth or dare?”

“Uh…” Damn. I shrugged, not sure what would be worse from her. I ended up going with, “Truth,” only to hold my breath and hope she didn’t ask about why I’d really broken up with her. I didn’t want to hurt her feelings and admit that I just didn’t feel any sparks.

But she glanced calculatingly between me and Peyton instead, then asked, “You two have known each other your whole lives, right?”

I frowned in confusion. “Uh, yeah. That’s your question?”

“No. My question is if you two have ever kissed before.”

“What? No!” I frowned at her for wasting her truth question on that and then glanced toward Peyton, shaking my head to let her know my group of friends was clearly insane.

She merely blushed and shrugged back.

And Wes took his turn next in the game.

“York!” he cheered. “Truth or dare?”

“Seriously?” I threw up my hands. “Why is everyone picking on me all of the sudden?”

“Truth or dare?” Wes repeated, lifting a challenging eyebrow.

I didn’t like where Aria had been heading with her question about Peyton, so this time I said, “Dare.”

Wes looked at me with victory, letting me know I’d chosen wrong, right before he said, “I dare you to kiss Peyton.”

Have a look at A Shape on the Air by Julia Ibbotson #historical #timeslip #BlogTour #CoffeePotBookClub @JuliaIbbotson @cathiedunn

A Shape on the Air
By Julia Ibbotson

A haunting Anglo-Saxon time-slip of mystery and romance

Can echoes of the past threaten the present? They are 1500 years apart, but can they reach out to each other across the centuries? One woman faces a traumatic truth in the present day. The other is forced to marry the man she hates as the 'dark ages' unfold.

How can Dr Viv DuLac, medievalist and academic, unlock the secrets of the past? Traumatised by betrayal, she slips into 499 AD and into the body of Lady Vivianne, who is also battling treachery. Viv must uncover the mystery of the key that she unwittingly brings back with her to the present day, as echoes of the past resonate through time. But little does Viv realise just how much both their lives across the centuries will become so intertwined. And in the end, how can they help each other across the ages without changing the course of history?

For fans of Barbara Erskine, Pamela Hartshorne, Susanna Kearsley, Christina Courtenay.

Julia Ibbotson is fascinated by the medieval world and the concept of resonances across time. She sees her author brand as a historical fiction writer of romantic mysteries that are character-driven, well-paced, evocative of time and place, well-researched and uplifting page-turners. Her current series focuses on early medieval dual-time/time-slip mysteries.

Julia read English at Keele University, England, specialising in medieval language/ literature/ history, and has a PhD in socio-linguistics. After a turbulent time in Ghana, West Africa, she became a school teacher, then a university academic and researcher.

Her break as an author came soon after she joined the RNA’s New Writers’ Scheme in 2015, with a three-book deal from Lume Books for a trilogy (Drumbeats) set in Ghana in the 1960s. She has also indie-published three other books, including A Shape on the Air, an Anglo-Saxon timeslip mystery, and its two sequels The Dragon Tree and The Rune Stone. Her latest, Daughter of Mercia, is the first of a new series of Anglo-Saxon dual time mystery/romances where echoes of the past resonate across the centuries.

Her books will appeal to fans of Barbara Erskine, Pamela Hartshorne, Susanna Kearsley, and Christina Courtenay. Her readers say: ‘compelling character-driven novels’, ‘a skilled story-teller’, ‘evocative and well-paced storylines’, ‘incredible writing style’, ‘intricately written’, ‘absorbing and captivating’, and ‘an absolute gem of a trilogy’.
