INTERVIEW

Writing Interview questions.

Why did you choose to write your book in this era?

I think pre-Christian Irish history is under-represented. For me, it is one of the most exciting and colorful periods of European history. The Celts are a widely misunderstood and misrepresented culture. There is a common belief that Celtic tribes were all poets and musicians, great artists and metalworkers. Which, although all true, skips over their extreme violence and warring nature.

What is the most surprising thing you discovered while you were researching this era?

There is little consensus among the scholars who specialize in pre-Christian Ireland. Most of what we know comes from archeology because the Ancient Irish had no written language. Their history was passed on as a verbal tradition by the druids, so when the druids were destroyed by the advent of Christianity, much of it was lost. For every theory out there, there is a counter theory.

Can you share something about the book that isn’t covered in the blurb?

The main character, Genonn is in love with the druidess Fedelm but unwilling to admit it to either himself or her.

If you had to describe your protagonist, in three words, what would those three words be?

Conflicted, man-child, loyal.

What are you currently working on?

I am currently working on the third book in my Milesians series, which is called Milesian Brother of Justice. It is a sequel to Milesian Son of Light and Milesian Daughter of War.

Personal Interview questions.

What did you want to be when you grew up?

I always wanted to be a writer.

What’s your favourite food?

Multiple foods float my boat. I like Italian, Indian, Chinese, and a good old roast dinner on a Sunday.

What is the best part of your day?

Relaxing in front of the fire with a G&T and a book.

Micheál Cladáin studied the classics and developed a love of ancient civilizations during those studies. Learning about ancient Roman and Greek cultures was augmented by a combined sixteen years living in those societies, albeit the modern versions, in Cyprus and Italy. As such, Micheál decided to write historical fiction, trying to follow in the footsteps of such greats as Bernard Cornwell and Conn Iggulden. Because of his Irish roots, he chose pre-Christian Ireland as his setting, rather than ancient Italy or Greece.

Micheál is a full-time writer, who lives in the wilds of Wexford with his wife and their border terriers, Ruby and Maisy.
