Turning the World to Stone
The Life of Caterina Sforza Part One 1472 to 1488
By Kelly Evans

Vilified by history, Caterina Sforza learned early that her life was not her own. Married at age ten, she was a pawn in the ever-changing political environment of Renaissance Italy.

Resigned to her life as a fifteenth-century wife, Caterina adapted to the role she was expected to play: raising and educating her children, helping the poor in her new home, and turning a blind eye to her husband’s increasingly shameful behaviour. But Fate had other plans for her, and soon Caterina’s path would be plagued by murder, betrayal, and heartbreak.

“Could I write all, the world would turn to stone.”

Book Snippet

At the end of the night, after Girolamo had gone to bed and she’d bid goodbye to most of her guests, she turned to Cobelli. “How do you come to know so much about everyone and everything, I wonder,” she said.

“People enjoy talking to me. I’m a good listener.” A servant helped him into his cloak.

She watched as he fastened the intricate silver pin. “I’ll have to be careful what I say around you, Signor.”

Leaning forward to kiss her hand goodnight, Leone fixed his eyes on her. “Your words, Madonna, will always be safe with me. I know your story. It arrived here before you did. And I would never betray the trust of one as fearsome as you.”

Unsure of whether he was teasing her, she curtsied and said goodnight, wondering if she’d found another ally.
